Educational opportunity is a tool crucial to the empowerment of the marginalized, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. Research has shown that LGBT youth are much more likely to drop out from school than their heterosexual peers. Reasons include but are not limited to: minority stress, school bullying, and lack of support from family. Inspired by initiatives like the Mathew Sheppard Scholarship, Point Foundation, and Live Out Loud, Viet Pride 2013 initiated the Strive with Pride Scholarship. This is an effort to close the opportunity gap, helping LGBT youth in Vietnam to fulfill their academic and leadership potential. The Strive with Pride Scholarship will help LGBT people demonstrate that they can succeed at the same level as their heterosexual counterparts, thus promoting greater acceptance and respect for this community.
The Strive with Pride scholarship is part of Viet Pride 2013. The official application portal of Strive with Pride scholarship will open on August 2, the opening night of Viet Pride 2013.

What do the scholarships entail?
What is it about?
Why scholarships?
- To help close the opportunity gap created by discrimination of LGBT people.
- To change the heteronormative power structure by substituting shame for pride in the awardees’ families, classrooms and workplaces.

How are donors acknowledged and protected?
Viet Pride believes in honoring those who work toward equality for the marginalized. Therefore, Viet Pride offers named scholarships: if a donation comprises a full scholarship, the scholarship will be named for its source, whether it be the donor themselves or an individual or institution they wish to honor (for example, “John Smith Scholarship”, “Matthew Sheppard Scholarship”, or “Centre for LGBT Equality Scholarship”). A scholarship comprised of multiple donations will be generically named a “Strive with Pride Scholarship”. All donations, big or small, will be acknowledged on Viet Pride 2013’s website.
Donations can be made in the form of pledge or in full cash/bank transfer at any time before 15 July 2013. Cash/bank transfer of pledges can be done at any time until the end of the process when scholarship recipients who fulfill all the requirements are identified, estimated to be between 15 August 2014 and 15 September 2014.
If we do not reach our monetary goal for a scholarship, or if no applicant is determined eligible for the scholarship, no amount will be charged for a pledge, and all donors will be fully reimbursed.
